May God rest their souls... I am in awe over the evil people that exist in this world. 20 children, ages 5-10 years, had their lives stolen from them on this day. 7 more adults also had their lives cut short.

What can be done to prevent tragedies such as this?

The story will unfold, and we'll hear about this guy showing signs for years, in trouble at school, in trouble with the law, etc. Mental health screening as a prerequisite for gun ownership? Oh yeah, I support that. Who in the fuck could gun down 6-9 year old kids?

I had to take a few minutes to gather my thoughts regarding the situation. The world we live in is really turning into a horrific place. To what lengths do we need to go in order to protect our children? Do we need to install metal detectors in every school and screen everyone that enters? Do we need to arm teachers and principals in schools and train them in the use of firearms? How far do we need to go?

I mean, these parents will have unopened Christmas presents under the tree that their innocent children will never be able to open. These are children that did nothing wrong, and were in a place that is supposed to be safe for every child. It seems more understandable in my mind to look at Columbine, considering it was one student against the others that had harassed him for years. But, these were all random children that were very young in age, and were completely helpless and innocent. It appears his only tie to the school was that his mother was a teacher there. This world is a very sick place when we can't even trust the general populace of our communities to have the decency to prevent such an incident.

It's a mental health issue and maybe tragedies like these will wake America up and realize things like universal health care which should include mental healthcare are something this country needs and deserves!

I doubt we will learn anything from this and it will be politics as usual and loud mouth ideologues who are incapable of rational thought will continue spewing their standard talking points.

Evil? I don't think that's the right word, sick is more accurate.

This happened about 2 miles down the road from where I work... Complete tragedy all around.

At this point, all we can do is think of all of the families who lost a child or loved one in the school today. What's sickening me the most is everyone already getting on their soap boxes about gun control, court system reform, mental heath collapses, and so on. Let's give it a bit of time before we go on all of our rants.

More laws and retarded thinking will do no good.

The simple fact of the matter is there are to many people in this world and the earth can not sustain itself anymore. Spiritual or environmental.

RIP to all those poor children.

I understand the sentiment but we keep doing that and no real debate ever gets started. We had the mall shooter and we were told to wait till some time has passed before discussing the issue, well guess what, in the bean time another tragedy happened. I'm done waiting for some kind of real debate to happen, it didn't happen after columbine, it didn't happen after Virginia tech, and it didn't happen after the mall shooting.

Real debate needs to happen now not when it's too late.

Nice segway into into the universal healthcare thing, didn't see that coming.

Turns out the Mom bought the guns for him. Bad parenting, really bad judgement. I have a friend who has a similar situation brewing in their family. One of the sons has mental health issues and they buy guns for him. They've awoken in the night to find him watching them sleep...

Anyway, I've thought about this a lot and I don't think mental health care would really prevent anything. There was a massacre last year where the kid was in therapy, told his fucking therapist what he was going to do.

In all the latest cases, no amount of gun control, short of an outright national gun ban, would have stopped the tradegies. The firearms at the mall and at the school were owned
and purchased, yet stolen by the perps, by legally obtaining and registering those arms. gun control freaks will not tell you this and will not even mention it.
This world makes me sick. Politics will use every instance as a reason to take all firearms thus dimminishing our bill of rights. Meanwhile, the sickness continues and something else will be used to obtain the same, or worse, results by the crazies out there.

^^^ Yeah, I was going to mention that story. Basically reinforces what Wiskas was saying, that gun control really isn't the issue.

Which is why I didn't go off about gun control and instead focused on as close to the root cause as possible, mental health. The real issue as you stated is bad parenting but you know as well as I do that there never will be an government intervention with regards to parenting (except for the law already in place not allowing parent to spank their kids).

Yeah because the government doesn't have enough control over our lives yet does it?

Universal healthcare doesn't give any more control to the government than already exists.

I feel strongly both ways on gun control. The difference is the slasher in China didn't leave 20 grade school kids dead.

    Yet.

Also, Mexico is in the midst of a drug funded civil war, hardly comparable to non-organized acts of violence.

you know. when we hear about these shootings.. they happen, violently, and they stick with us. some of us forget to make room for the new murders and mass shootings.

but you gotta think.. what exactly is it that sparks these mass shootings like this?
deep down, i believe its something much more than "video games", 2012, stress, anger, EVIL, the devil, "crazy", etc all the usual mind numbing excuses for why people do these things.
theyre nothing more than EXCUSES and lack of reasoning for the real reason, one that we'll probably never discover or know.

it takes a certain "thing" to persuade or give a person the confidence to mass murder adults. yes, thats very common in mexico nowadays and we're pretty much unfased by it now.
but theres another certain "thing" to persuade a person to kill masses of children AND adults.

    what exactly is this "thing"?
i dont know about a higher power within our reality, but everyone has the cliche of saying "everything happens for a reason". Why did this happen? for what reason? Ban the quote? wtf
im just trying to think outside of the mind numbing "weep about it and hope to not see another tragedy"

Even the local news had a media frenzy with this incident. The guy that did it "looks" crazy as a
    trapped racoon. http://usnews.nbcnews.com/_news/201...-killed-27-in-elementary-school-massacre?lite

Now days there are more media fame opportunities, you think there may be more happenings?
At least it wasn't our own guv doing the slaughter like over in Syria. There are more gruesome
and savage things going on in the world but man-o-man, we're supposed to be civilized over here.

I would say a general lack of spirituality. You don't have to believe in God to be spiritual. Some people get in touch with nature, etc.

A lot of people want world peace but how many of them actually practice the virtue of peace on a daily basis?

With the non - stop world going 24 / 7 / 365. It is more something you have to plan to do or you just forget about it.
