so what do you think of getting rid of TV?

i've been thinking for a while but I pay $140ish for tv and internet through comcast. I'm sure a lot of my tv viewing, if not all, could be watched over the internet. if I cut my tv and upgraded to business class internet (to get no bandwidth cap), i'd be paying $90 instead of $140. i already have a computer dedicated hooked up to my tv.

has anyone here actually done this? i'm just wondering if it would be worth it and if, indeed, i could download everything i wanted. don't most the networks now have their shows on their website or through hulu?

I did that a couple of years ago. Now all my favorite shows stream online and anything else I just download. Its been really nice getting rid of all the filler that tv brings. Way less or no commercials and no more channel surfing to the most random crap ever. I haven't paid a cable tv bill since I moved away from home. Its been nice!

nice, cool to know that a few of you are doing this. it seems that Discovery channel and History channel have a few shows that I watch not online. I'm hoping I can download them somewhere else. i'll have to look into newsgroups. prefer not to have to pay if I can avoid it.

You're being really cheap if you can't cough out $11 dollars a month, plus it's good quality depending on what kind of quality you are downloading (they are in divx and 720p/1080p). No commercials either

lol yes I am cheap. I mean I'll do it if I need to but if there is a way to find all my shows for free, I'd rather just do that route, wouldn't you? my guess is that I won't be able to find EVERYTHING i like so i'll have to go that route.

This is all I use. I only watch a handful of shows, but with a little searching I can typically find everything I could ever want.

I just wish i wasn't so broke all the time (trying to pay off credit card, and am doing it), i would buy an LCD TV so I can watch them sitting on my couch in my room instead of sitting in front of my computer on my computer chair :/

ya that would suck. like i said, i already have a desktop computer that's always connected to my tv so that's not a problem.

what i wish is that the cable/satellite companies would realize that we want to watch our stuff online and make their own service for it. that'd be nice. they are stupid not to because they are losing some of our business.

Cablecards have been given the go ahead for consumer so you should be able to do what you want pretty soon.

Been TV free for 1 week now. I've been watching all the shows I care for on the computer for about 2 years now, though.

Get rid of TV, no question. But $90 a month for fast internet? That's ridiculous, I'm glad we don't have Comcast around here. I pay something like $25-30 a month for around 3Mbps down 850Kbps up.

I'm pretty sure this is where the trend is going if not already here. Basic internet TV options with limited (if any) commercial interruptions.

I was in the States yesterday and the amount of adverts on your networks is crazy it would drive me to stop watching tv, it's like Adverts every 5 minutes.

Seriously. I barely watch TV or listen to FM radio for this reason, it's gotten ridiculous. Cable TV in particular burns my ass because back in the day, when it was new, we paid our fees to avoid commercials. Now we pay our fees AND get the fucking commercials! I've already sent a few warnings to XM radio, as they have a few Clearchannel offerings with ads. I said "Listen, as soon as my favorite channels have ads I'm gone. You're not going to sneak them in like the fucking cables companies." So far so good.

i use my tv to watch dvd's and some sports, that is all

For a 30 minute show there's 8 minutes of advertising. For an hour show there's usually about 20 minutes of ads

For the UK it's 7 minutes of adverts per hour so half what you have.
BBC have none but it's paid for via Tax.

well it's a lot more to have the business class so you are uncapped. i have 16meg down for $45 a month but residential service has a 250gb cap. as it stands, I can get close to that now. but if i used my internet for all my tv watching needs, 250GB would not be enough.

while that is nice, cablecards isn't exactly what I am looking for. with cablecards, all that does is allow you to use a tv tuner on your computer to watch it there. it's not that I want to watch tv on my computer screen, it's that i want to watch tv through the internet (either on my computer or through my tv with an internet connected device).

i'm sure it's only a matter of time anyways. the internet companies have been fighting this for a while, hence, we have caps on internet now. nobody should usually touch 250gb a month unless they are downloading video. but that's a direct competition to their cable tv services.

the only thing that is going to suck about not having traditional tv is that i will have to wait for the shows to be put online and I can't "channel surf" to find something to watch when I"m bored (not that that happens very often anyways).

See, I don't have to deal with caps either. Comcast is fucking evil...

i'm sure you will at some point. although i think dsl has less of an incentive as they aren't also selling tv service as well, so maybe they won't.

unfortunately, dsl is not available in my area. pretty sick considering i'm just 20 miles south of seattle. i wish it was available though. be nice to have some competition.

Fuckin DSL forces me to have a goddamn landline, so I pay $70 for about the same.
