I might be getting a 360 soon (free/used) and was wondering what was involved in modding it to play back ups or to use it as a media extender device.

I have an original xbox that I modded and added a bigger hard drive and can stream videos/music from it but it's a little slow.
    Is the process similar?

I just need to know what I'm looking for and I can find out the rest (xbox-scene).

I would recommend having someone experienced do it as I have tried and messed up =) but then again i am clumsy.

anyways, i have owned 2 modded 360's and its just a simple firmware upgrade on the dvd drive. You would have to open it up and hook up the sata cable to your pc, and upgrade from there.

Burning games is easy as long as you download a pre-patched game from usenet or torrents. If its not patched, you can do it yourself its just a little bit more complicated. you have to use DVD-r DL discs which can get a little pricey (verbatim brand seem to be the most efficient)

Good Luck with the mod which ever way you decide to go and make sure you stay up to date with the firmware's so you don't get banned from XBL

Can you not run things from the hard drive (is there even a hard drive in the system)?
