Fittingly, I had Sicko on when I came across this.

Yeah I dunno about how those stats were derived though. To get a true body fat index on every one of those people would take alot of work and time.

Otherwise if it was based on height/weight, pffft. Those aren't accurate.

Yes they should take that into account as well as the awesome personalities that those fat chicks probably have. The people who do those studies are insensitive jerks.

Partly. I'm stuck between a tall father and a short mother...neither of which are skinny by todays standards. I'm built just like my father but a half foot shorter...so yeah, it can be the genetics.

ya, it kinda pisses me off that america gets the bad rep for being obese. Hell, I believe I'm considered obese still. I'm 6'6" and 215 pounds. they say my weight should be 185. Are you freakin kidding me? I'm pretty damn skinny. I wear a size 34 in the waist. I can't possibly lose any more fat as it is. Some of my weight is obviously muscle as I work out. I doubt they factor in muscle or body types and all that.

Yes, I know that lots of people probably do over eat and don't care what they eat but still. Look at the food we have. Even the stuff that is said to be "healthy" is half the time not. Everything is processed with shit in it (sometimes literally...). I watch what I eat but sometimes it's just so hard, especially when I'm pressed for time or money. It's so easy just to go get a 99 cent taco at taco bell or something. I don't eat out anymore at all but that's just an example. I just think that there are lots and lots of factors on why americans are more overweight than any other country or what not.

Maybe some of it but not a majority of it. Both of my parents are average height and skinny and I'm a fat ass.

It has to do with eating habits and Americans have really poor eating habits.

I'd probably be super fat if it weren't for the fact that I don't drink soda and I try to stay away from foods that contain partially hydrogenated oils. But even that wont over come my poor exercise habits and eating at odd hours and large proportions.

But damn I can't help it! My wife is a good cook and she makes great un-nutritious food!

We'd better get working at it then!

I don't know about the stats as mentioned above, but there are definitely more fatties now than there were 10-15 years ago from what I remember. This makes meeting chicks online a lot more difficult.

Yeah, but you're the exception dude. The reason those charts don't take muscle or body type into account is because generally you don't have to. Take a look around; there are a lot more fatasses walking around than jacked athletes whose muscle mass pushes them into overweight/obese territory.

Also, who says you should be 185? According to Calculate your BMI - Standard BMI Calculator you're not even overweight...

Article about CO health probably boring to squiggly states

25% didn't do any physical activity within the past 30 days and we get ranked 4th. That means there's a shitload of people not getting off their asses. Also, BMI is wildly inaccurate for anyone with muscle mass but chances are people they've pulled off the street for these studies weren't exactly the gym rat type.

statistics...... I don't need stats to be able to look around and see that 1 out of 3 people being obese is false. IMO and in my location anyway.

America eats so much fast food... Hell, i have some regulars at starbucks that get multiple venti frapucinos a day. I dont see this changing any time soon. no matter how much mcdonalds wants you to think that new grilled chicken and fresh lettuce is gonna save your life, it still goes down with a 32oz coke and a large fry.

34% is one hell of a claim and IMO is way off. Just because these are gov't stats doesn't mean they are accurate. In fact I bet most of these subjects are taken from gov't aid sites like welfare offices and such. Stats are just that stats. You can manipulate them in unlimited ways depending on how you want to skew them.

They really don't mean shit IMO. I have eyes and a brain so I can figure for myself thank you very much.

Any time I've visited the US I would generally say 1/3 - 1/4 of the people I saw I would consider overweight at the very least. And this was only Washington state--and as we know, the further south you go, the larger the waistlines get.

    Just an outsider view....

Maybe you don't feel the stats are true, but you're also a rich guy living in a rich area though so that will definitely change things.

"Overweight" is defined as an excess amount of body weight, including fat, muscle, bone and water. By contrast, "obesity" specifically refers to an excess amount of body fat. Some people, such as bodybuilders or other athletes with a lot of muscle, can be overweight without being obese.

I honestly feel like you guys need to take this more seriously even if you don't believe the statistic. It's a pretty devastating problem in North America (definitely up here too) that could easily be remedied...

Remember the premiss for "idiocracy"....that same principal is valid here. They are breeding!
I too have a hard time seeing 1/3 as a reliable number for the area I live in, but 1/4 isn't far off. My observation? Total lack of motivation and extreem laziness. Go to your grocery store and watch what kinds of foods obese and fit people buy. The obese do not buy anything healthy, only convenient. The fit buy things that take effort to prepare, not to mention leaner foods. This report did not surprise me at all. The laziness of people has and always will be my biggest pet peave. People just hurt themselves by not being willing to put effort into whatever it is they need to do. This is just one example.
And there is also the nature and nurture aspect to obesity. It has been proven, and the genes identified that cause an abnormal ability to store up fat tissues. There are also those that have been born into a lifestyle that promotes a lazy, convenience&oriented lifestyle (see Wall-E). There is way more hope for the latter than the first circumstance. It's definately much harder to loose and nearly imposible to maintain weight loss when genetics are the root cause.

I've gone from Maine to Florida ... and 1 out of 3 isn't bullshit. There are ALOT of fat people. I'd almost be willing to bet its closer to 2/3 are overweight. When i was in Portugal/Spain ... it was incredible i don't think i saw one "fat" person.

It is amazing to go places like Sweden and Italy. You look around and go "Woah, where are all the fat people???"

Then you come back to America, and its like, "Oh..."

Dude, survey samples are carefully chosen by statisticians to match the cross section of the United States as carefully as possible. They're not just picked up off of the street at the welfare office. Look at the election; most of the polls were within 2-3% points of the final tally. So why should this poll be any different? Also, look at the spiraling incidence of diseases which are related to being overweight, such as Diabetes or Heart Disease. All signs point to the fact that as a nation we're pretty fucking fat. Just because there aren't a lot of fat people where you live means nothing about the national rate.

Why should we get government health care? Because we can't take care of ourselves.
